After being asked to bat first by Australia the Kiwis piled on the runs with Martin Guptill making; a magnificent 97 from just fifty balls for the hosts leading them to a massive 7-219 from their 20 overs.
There were some promising signs early in the run chase for the Aussies with Philippe blasting his way to 45 from just 32 balls.
Mitchell Santner then caused some headaches for the Australian middle order claiming four wickets. This brought former IPL team mates Stoinis and Sams together at the crease faced with an ominous task which they nearly pulled off.
The Sams and Stoinis show was full of entertainment with balls disappearing to all parts of the University Oval at Dunedin. A 92 run partnership off just 37 balls put the tourists in a position to pull off a miracle run chase.
James Neesham held his nerve however claiming the crucial wicket of Sams on the first ball of the twentieth over. He followed it up with the wicket of Stoinis ensuring that the home side would sneak home.
A four run win for New Zealand sees them take a 2-0 lead in the five game series.
